About the Course

This workshop has been co-designed with Aboriginal community-controlled organisations to ensure that learning reflects community values, child-rearing practices, and approaches to healing. It provides a culturally safe space for participants to explore how domestic and family violence affects children and young people, acknowledging the intergenerational impacts of trauma and the importance of connection to culture, family, and Country in recovery.

Once thought to be “silent witnesses,” we now know children are deeply affected by violence in their homes. This session builds understanding of how children experience and make sense of violence, and how workers can respond with empathy, insight, and culturally grounded support.

Participants will:

  • Explore how power and control dynamics shape children’s beliefs and behaviours.

  • Identify the impacts of domestic and family violence on physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

  • Examine links between trauma, early brain development, and behaviour.

  • Recognise signs of distress or trauma responses in children.

  • Learn culturally safe strategies to support healing and resilience for children and families.

Who should attend:Professionals and community workers who engage with families, children, or young people and seek a culturally informed understanding of the impacts of family and domestic violence.
